This is because mineral and petroleum based colorants may carry residues of heavy metals, which are naturally present in the earth’s crust. Surprisingly, even our favorite lip glosses may contain lead. In a test on 400 lipsticks, Maybelline and L’Oreal were found to have lead levels of 7.19 parts per million (ppm) and 7.0 ppm, respectively. Now, let’s talk about the safer side of colorants. While mineral and petroleum based petroleum based colorants may have heavy metal residues, mineral pigments, like iron oxides, are safer. Unlike petroleum based ones, mineral pigments don’t carry contaminants like benzo pyrene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and brominated resorcinol. One thing to note is that I prefer mineral pigments not manufactured in China. Why? I’m cautious due to China’s high pollution levels and lenient regulations. That’s why I don’t consider makeup with pigments from China as clean beauty products.
