Analyzing Ingredient Lists a Close Look Before Making Judgments on product.

I pay close attention to product components, especially those claiming clean beauty options. This matters to me for a couple of reasons. First, my dad passed away from cancer at the age of 57 and second, I have faced two diagnoses of autoimmune diseases in my life. The good news is that I have recovered from one, Hashimoto’s, Thyroiditis, and I’m on the road to recovery from the second, Addison’s. If you want more details, you can check out my posts Can Breast Implants Cause Autoimmune Diseases’ and My Health Update After Explant Surgery.

My journey into scrutinizing product ingredients began in 2011 when I was expecting my son. I was surprised to see long names of chemicals on a natural baby shampoo bottle. This led me to learn about ingredients and how products are made. My passion and mission became to help others free their homes from chemicals. Cleaning your home from toxic substances can improve health, but it’s essential to do it step by step without getting stressed. Stress is counterproductive. Before writing a product review, I carefully examine multiple sources to study the ingredients. You can find more about my research method and the resources I use on my Start Here page. Now, let’s talk about vegan lip glosses and their components.

Even Vegan Lip Gloss Must Have Colorants

To start, let’s talk about colorants or pigments. These are the magic components that give makeup its color. Whether it’s a bold lipstick or a subtle lip gloss, colorants are what make makeup, well, makeup. Interestingly, they are the reason why makeup can’t get that certified organic stamp even if it has organic plant based ingredients. This is because mineral and petroleum based colorants may carry residues of heavy metals, which are naturally present in the earth’s crust. Check out my post for insights from independent tests on cosmetics, revealing the scoop on heavy metals in makeup.

Surprisingly, even our favorite lip glosses may contain lead. In a test on 400 lipsticks, Maybelline and L’Oreal were found to have lead levels of 7.19 parts per million (ppm) and 7.0 ppm, respectively. If you want to know how to protect yourself from lead in makeup, do not miss my post about lead in lipstick.

Now, let’s talk about the safer side of colorants. While mineral and petroleum based petroleum based colorants may have heavy metal residues, mineral pigments, like iron oxides, are safer. Unlike petroleum based ones, mineral pigments don’t carry contaminants like benzo pyrene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and brominated resorcinol. One thing to note is that I prefer mineral pigments not manufactured in China. Why? I’m cautious due to China’s high pollution levels and lenient regulations. That’s why I don’t consider makeup with pigments from China as clean beauty products.

Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2 in Vegan Lip Gloss

  • Key Lip Gloss Ingredient: Bis-diglyceryl polyacyladipate-2 makes lip gloss shiny.
  • Dual Purpose: This ingredient isn’t just for lip gloss; it’s also used in hair colors to cover damage from coloring. Check out my post on ammonia-free hair color brands if you color your hair.
  • EWG Skin Deep Rating: It gets a 1 out of 10 rating, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily safe. EWG notes the absence of safety data, so be cautious.
  • Misleading Database: The Skin Deep database is inaccurate; it lacks safety data for bis-diglyceryl polyacyladipate-2.
  • Actual Safety Data: Luckily, there is safety data available. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel issued a safety report in 2013. Please read my post for more insights, especially for vegan lip glosses.

Research on bis-diglyceryl polyacyladipate-2, among various lip gloss ingredients, confirms its safety.

  • Safety Check: Studies on bis-diglyceryl polyacyladipate-2, a lip gloss ingredient, show it’s safe.
  • Animal Tests: High oral doses didn’t harm animal reproduction, fertility, or development.
  • Human Tests: Human patch tests found it neither irritating nor sensitizing.
  • Ingredients: Made by heating several components, adipic acid is the only mild concern.
  • EU Approval: Bis-diglyceryl polyacyladipate-2 is allowed in cosmetics and personal care products in the EU.
  • Overall Verdict: Despite being synthetic, it’s safe and fitting for nontoxic, vegan lip gloss.

My Favorite Safe Lip Gloss Is Crunchy

1. Personal Choice: I use Crunchi lipstick or lip gloss when I want unique lip makeup.

2. About Crunchi:

  • Ingredient Origin: Crunchi ensures their mineral pigments, used in clean beauty makeup, do not come from China.
  • Quality Assurance: They use ECOCERT certified iron oxides, guaranteeing no synthetic additives and compliance with heavy metals standards.
  • Transparency Issues: Some companies don’t reveal the source of their pigments, or they get them from China. It’s a good idea to ask your makeup company about this.
  • Heavy Metal Testing: Crunchi opts for third-party testing, finding minimal heavy metal levels well below European and Canadian limits.
  • Eco-Friendly Packaging: Their lip gloss comes in a recyclable glass tube with a BPA-free and phthalate-free plastic cap and wand.
